Jacobites

Jacobites were the Scots who were loyal to King James.

In 1688 the British Isles were in turmoil. Civil war was brewing. Catholic king James Stuart fled to France, and eventually ended up in Rome. The English and Scottish parliaments named his nephew William of Orange (and William's wife Mary) to come from Europe and rule in James' place. The Scottish parliament even made Presbyterianism the state religion.

Battles to restore James to the throne began in 1689 and ended with the disastrous defeat of the forces led by Prince Charles, James's heir, at Culloden Moor in 1745. Charles returned to France. He was a celebrity, but sank into drink and conspiracy theories.

This is a monument to the Jacobites. However, those of us who climbed up the treacherous path for this view all gathered on the other side of the hill, to see a site from the Harry Potter films. More about that anon.
