As we approached Loch Lomond our guide explained the meaning of the lyrics to the famous Loch Lomand song.

O you'll take the high road and
I'll take the low road
And  I'll be in Scotland afore ye
But  me and my true love will never meet again On the bonnie, bonnie banks of Loch Lomond

It turns out that the low road is death! Two soldiers are tried in an English court. One of them is to be freed the next day to walk home, the other will be executed in the morning. There's a legend that Scots who die away from the country will be spirited back home. Death is the faster way to make the journey.

Our guide then played the song, which we found moving.

Hear the song.
