As we walked from the ferry landing to the Iona Abbey we encountered the ruins of an Augustinian nunnery. It was founded in the same time frame as the extant Abbey, about 1200. The nunnery ruins are primarily from the 14th century. The nunnery declined after the Scottish reformation: in the mid 1500s the Catholic supremacy over the Scottish church was rejected and nuns were no longer needed. However, women continued to be buried here for some time. |
