Quirks

Switches, outlet, charging slots

We knew that British outlets are different so we brought converters. But when we plugged our phone chargers in, they didn't work. We talked to the lady at the desk about a converter for sale in the hotel lobby, but it didn't have the feature she thought we needed. She suggested we try one from a nearby Tesco, a sort of grocery store/general store. So we went to Tesco and bought one, but it didn't work either. So the next day we went to an Apple store and bought two like the photo on the previous page. But they STILL didn't work!

Then we noticed a switch by the outlet. We pressed it, and suddenly every one of our many adapters worked.

It actually makes sense once you get it; it saves energy. In the hotel shown here there were also embedded USB plugs, but they and the outlet only worked when you pressed the switch.

Shower with mural of loch scene   Bathtub that is tempting but not safe for such as we

Bathrooms were also confusing. The shower on the left (the sink is reflected in glass and the scenery is a mural on the wall) has, as did all the hotel showers, separate controls for water pressure and temperature control. The first time I encountered this the controls were behind me as I faced the water source. I almost gave up before I figured it out.

Now, the bathtubs in some of the hotels were quite large and had these side gripping handles. Very tempting, a quite pleasant bath. However, the tubs turned out to be super slippery and the side handles didn't suffice. It was Laurel and Hardy time getting out of these booby trap tubs.

Telephone with actual dialing mechanism   Doorknob that looks like a person
We had no trouble understanding how to use this phone, but young visitors might find it challenging.

I'm just throwing in this quirky portrait
of a man on our hotel room door.
Just because it amuses me.
