Happy Memory CHALLENGE! Challenge 7: First Home

Irene and me dancing

I said the first thing that pops into your head, right? Well, for whatever reason the first thing I thought of was a holiday when one of my sister’s college friends came to our house because her own family lived far away, and we danced to You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown.” (Susan is famous for nicknaming people. For some reason this intelligent young woman was “Nutty Irene.”)

When Susan saw this she corrected my memory. Hers is actually better: "I asked dad to come get us so that we could dance to the record (and probably have dinner). To him that was a perfectly reasonable proposal, which showed me our dad was special."

Our parents were always so welcoming to our friends!

I don't know how old I was, surely older than this. I was standing in the grass in the front yard of our Amvet Village house. I was wearing shorts. I was barefoot, and I think maybe I got stung or stepped on something sharp, but I don’t remember pain. I remember remembering. I realized I was remembering the summer before. The feel of grass under my toes. And I marveled that I remembered a whole year.
