I could spend my whole life photographing circuses. They combine everything I'm interested in— they're ironic, poetic, and corny at the same time. There's also something about a circus that's magical, sentimental, and almost tragic, like a Fellini film.
—Mary Ellen Mark

Edward J. Kelty

Kelty was a circus photographer for 20 years. He suddenly quit taking photographs in 1940. No one knows why.

Weegee

The circus may be described as a gigantic spectacle; which is surrounded by an audience.
—e. e. cummings

Arthur Jellig, AKA Weegee, was a photojournalist best known for documenting the seedy sides of New York City. He turned his camera on the circus audience as well as the artists.

Other fine photographers

There are a slew of photographs I downloaded but didn't end up using, and the ones I downloaded are just the tip of the iceberg. The circus is a superior subject for photography.

STEP RIGHT UP!

Ladies and Gentlemen, many more images are scattered through the
Grand Glossary and the Major Milestones.

A word about why my captions and credits are so lacking: mea culpa.
But I do provide instructions for finding information about images online.
